7shifts 101: Tip Pooling
With 7shifts Tip Pooling, you can combine custom tip rules with your POS or 7punches data to automatically calculate tip distribution. This powerful tool helps you save up to 8 hours per week by managing contributions, distribution rules, and payroll exports all in one place. Things to know
Important: Time Clocking must be enabled in your 7shifts account before you can set up Tip Pooling.
- Tip Pooling settings and rule configurations are only accessible via the 7shifts web app.
- If you use 7punches for time clocking, Tip Pooling is available using tip data from 7punches. However, only employees' Declared Tips will be included into the Tip Pool calculations.
- Changes made to tip rules will update the current open pay period immediately, even if the change occurs halfway through the period.
- Deactivated employees are removed from the open pay period, or if a past pay period was reopened after their deactivation. This will affect your report figures.
- Employees or Roles can be assigned to multiple pools, so be sure to review your settings to avoid double-counting contributions.
Enable Tip Pooling
By connecting Time Clocking with Tip Pooling, you can accurately track worked hours and associate tip contributions directly with those hours.
- Enable Time Clocking by navigating to Time Clocking > Start Time Clocking. Follow the prompts to set it up according to your preferences, or follow the steps here.
- Hover over your profile icon and select Add-ons.
- Select Tip Pooling from the list of available features.
- Click Enable Tip Pooling to start a free trial. (Note: Only Admins can complete the final purchase after the trial ends).
- Select Go To Tip Pooling to begin.
Once enabled, you can always find this tool by going to Tip Management > Tip Pooling in the left navigation bar.
Choose a contribution method
7shifts offers two ways to handle tips depending on your POS system and business needs. Choosing the right one ensures your data flows smoothly!
Automatic Contribution
If you use a supported POS integration, 7shifts can automatically pull tip data to calculate distributions based on your rules. This is the most efficient way to manage your pool!

Manual Contribution
Restaurants that do not use a supported POS or those that want to use tip data from a specific source, can use this method to manually enter your daily tip data into 7shifts for redistribution among your employees. Follow the link below to begin setting up your tip pool: Manual Contribution.
Important: Switching POS systems can impact your workflow. If you move to a POS that doesn't support automatic data pulling, you will need to switch to manual entry. It is important to understand how this will impact your tip pooling process.
