What is the difference between User Types and Roles in 7shifts?

In 7shifts, you'll come across user types and roles. While both terms relate to how employees interact with 7shifts, they serve distinct functions within your 7shifts Account Structure.

What are User Types?

User types define the level of access and permissions a person has within 7shifts. They determine what actions a user can perform, what feature areas they can access, and what management capabilities they possess.

Properly assigning user types ensures that each team member has the appropriate level of access to perform their responsibilities.


What are Roles?

Roles refer to the specific job titles or positions that employees hold within the restaurant. These roles are used primarily for scheduling purposes, allowing scheduling managers to assign shifts according to the specific tasks required for each position. Examples include Server, Bartender, Cook, and Dishwasher.

Roles can also be linked to specific wage rates, allowing you to accurately predict and track labour costs based on the roles employees are scheduled for.


How User Types and Roles Work Together

  • User types in 7shifts determine the level of access and control a person has within 7shifts.
  • Roles specify the job positions employees perform and how the team is organized on the schedule. 

For example, a person assigned the Manager user type may also hold the role of General Manager. This setup allows them to oversee scheduling and daily operations while having the necessary access to manage these tasks.

Alternatively, an employee with the Employee user type might hold the role of Server, limiting their access to only viewing schedules and submitting availability.
