Because your employer runs payroll through 7shifts, signing up is straightforward with no personal bank account linking required. Complete a quick authorization in the app, and you're set. All advances are automatically repaid when payroll is processed.

Important: This article applies only if your employer processes payroll through 7shifts Payroll with an active 7shifts Payroll account.

The upgraded Clair On-Demand Pay experience for 7shifts Payroll customers is rolling out in phases, and your account will upgrade automatically once it’s available. The first time you open Clair in 7shifts after the update, just follow the prompts to confirm your details and unlock the new features.

Things to know

⚠️ Important: Your employer must be on 7shifts Payroll and have Clair enabled before you can access this feature. If the Clair On-Demand Pay option is not visible in your app, contact your manager or Admin.

  • You must be 18 years or older and reside in the United States (excluding CT, MA, MN, NM, SD).
  • W-2 employees only. Contractors are not eligible at this time.
  • You do not need to link your personal bank account. Because your employer uses 7shifts Payroll, your bank account is automatically connected through payroll data. You'll skip the Plaid bank-linking step.
  • Clair does not run hard or soft credit checks. Your eligibility and advance amount are based on your employment and payroll data.
  • Repayment is automatic and built into your paycheck. When you take an advance, the amount is repaid on your next paycheck via a net-pay split before your remaining pay is deposited. It shows up on your pay stub as a direct deposit allocation to a Pathward DDA account.
  • The MFA code for your Clair account is separate from your 7shifts login. If you update your phone number in 7shifts, it doesn't automatically update your Clair MFA. For help with Clair MFA, contact Clair directly at support@getclair.com.

What is Clair On-Demand Pay?

On-Demand Pay is a financial benefit that lets you access a portion of the wages you've already earned before your next scheduled payday. The service is powered by Clair, with all advances issued by Clair's partner bank, Pathward®, N.A.

For employees at 7shifts Payroll restaurants, Clair uses your employer's payroll data to verify your eligibility and determine your advance amount. You can get set up quickly without connecting a personal bank account.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Your employer is on 7shifts Payroll with Clair enabled.
  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have a valid Social Security Number and are employed in the United States.
  • You reside in a state where Clair operates (see Things to know for exclusions).
  • You are a W-2 employee (not a contractor).

All Advances are originated by Pathward®, N.A., Member FDIC. All Advances are subject to eligibility criteria and application review. Terms and conditions apply.

How do I sign up?

Note: Because your employer uses 7shifts Payroll, your bank account is automatically connected. You won't see a Plaid bank-linking step during sign-up.

  1. Open the 7shifts mobile app and scroll to the bottom of your Dashboard to find the Clair On-Demand Pay button.
  2. Tap the action button to get started (e.g., "Continue" or "Get started").
  3. Agree to Clair's Terms and Agreements and open an On-Demand Payment account (DDA) to support repayment.
  4. Review and confirm your personal information if needed.
  5. Enter the verification code sent to your mobile phone.
  6. Once verified, you'll see your available balance (if any). Enter the amount you want to advance (up to $100 at a time).
  7. Review and confirm your advance.
  8. Choose if you'd like to upgrade to an Instant Transfer, which costs $4.99 and typically arrives within seconds.* Otherwise, your advance will arrive in 1–3 business days.

Important: If the On-Demand Pay banner is not visible, the feature has not been enabled for your company's 7shifts account. To get started, your account Admin can contact the 7shifts Support team.

*Instant Transfers typically occur in seconds, but may take up to 30 minutes. The $4.99 fee is deducted from your advance at the time of disbursement.

How much can I advance?

You can advance up to $100 at a time. Starting out, you can advance up to $200 per pay period. As you build a repayment history by consistently paying back advances over multiple pay cycles, your limit can increase up to $800.

Because you're on 7shifts Payroll, your advance amount is calculated using real payroll data. This often means you can qualify for higher limits and reach higher tiers faster than with the standard Clair experience.

The easiest way to see your current available balance is to check your On-Demand Pay dashboard in the app.

Work at multiple locations? If your employer operates multiple locations under different business entities, your available balance is calculated automatically. Clair detects which location has a higher pay and uses that to determine your advance amount. Nothing extra is required from you.

Are there any fees?

There are no required fees. Standard ACH transfers typically arrive in 1–3 business days and are completely free. If you need your funds immediately, you can choose an Instant Transfer for a $4.99 fee*, which is deducted from your advance at the time it's sent.

There's no interest and no late fees on advances.

*Instant Transfers typically occur in seconds, but may take up to 30 minutes. If you choose to have your Advance disbursed to your bank account instantly, you will be charged a $4.99 fee. This instant transfer fee will be taken out of your Advance at the time of disbursement.

How does repayment work?

Repayment is automatic. You don't need to do anything.

When you take an advance, Clair manages the repayment through a net-pay split when your employer runs payroll. Before your net pay is deposited into your bank account, Clair takes back the amount you advanced by directing it to your On-Demand Payment account. The remaining balance then gets deposited as usual.

You'll see the repayment on your pay stub as a direct deposit allocation to a Pathward DDA account. The amount repaid is always exactly what you borrowed, with no interest added. If you chose Instant Transfer, your repayment will include the original advance plus the $4.99 fee* — for example, a $100 advance with Instant Transfer means you received $95.01 but $100 is repaid from your paycheck.

If your paycheck is lower than your outstanding advance, Clair will take a partial repayment from that check and the remainder will be paid from your next paycheck. You won't be able to take a new advance until your full balance is repaid.

If your paycheck is delayed, your advance will be considered overdue, but it will still be repaid automatically when your paycheck arrives.

Does this notify my employer?

No, your employer is not notified. Although your employer is aware of this benefit, they are not directly notified when any employees take or repay an earned wage advance, and it has no impact or change to your employer's payroll process.

FAQ

Why don't I see On-Demand Pay in my app?
If the Clair On-Demand Pay button isn't visible, it may not be enabled for your company's account yet, or your employer may have opted out. Reach out to your manager or Admin to confirm.

Why do I show $0 available when I know I have completed shifts?

The minimum advance amount is $25, so if your available balance is under that, you won't be able to request an advance. Your available balance is based on what you earned in your last pay cycle, not your current shifts, so recently completed shifts may not be reflected yet.

There are a few other reasons you may not be able to advance despite having worked shifts:

  • You didn't receive a paycheck for your previous pay period
  • You were paid by check for your previous pay period
  • Clair is unable to verify your recent work activity

I already had a Clair account from a previous job. Can I use it here?
Yes, as long as your employer has Clair On-Demand Pay enabled in their 7shifts account, Clair supports up to three employers, so each will appear as a separate On-Demand Pay account with its own available balance. To take an advance from a specific job's paycheck, you can log into that account through the 7shifts app and access Clair On-Demand Pay from the Dashboard.

I already had Clair through my employer before they switched to 7shifts Payroll. What happens to my account?
Your account is automatically upgraded. Your advance history stays intact, repayment switches from the Plaid bank pull to the net-pay split. The first time you open Clair after the switch, you'll be prompted to open an On-Demand Payment account to support automatic repayments via direct deposit. You'll need to agree to these terms to continue taking advances.

What if my paycheck is smaller than what I owe Clair?
Clair will take a partial repayment from that paycheck and the remainder will be paid from your next one. You won't be able to take a new advance until the full balance is repaid.
