Clair | On-Demand Pay for Admins (7shifts Payroll)

Clair On-Demand Pay is a financial benefit that gives your employees access to advance a portion of their earned wages and before payday, directly in the 7shifts mobile app.

If your restaurant runs payroll through 7shifts Payroll, your team now has access to Clair On-Demand Pay (earned wage advances) at no cost to your business and with no setup required on your end. Because 7shifts Payroll is powered by Check, the integration works differently than the standard Clair experience. Employees don't need to link a personal bank account to sign up, and repayment happens automatically through a net-pay split on payday, visible right on their pay stub.

Note: The upgraded Clair On-Demand Pay experience for 7shifts Payroll customers is rolling out in phases. Your account will automatically upgrade when available.

Things to know

⚠️ Important: This article is specifically for restaurants using 7shifts Payroll. If your restaurant is not on 7shifts Payroll, see Clair | On-Demand Pay for Admins.

  • Clair On-Demand Pay is automatically enabled for eligible 7shifts Payroll accounts.
  • Only available for U.S.-based employees (excluding CT, MA, MN, NM, SD).
  • No configuration is required. Clair uses your payroll data (via Check Technologies) to verify employees, so there's no new setup screen or admin steps.
  • Your payroll process is not affected. You continue to run payroll as normal.
  • Employees access On-Demand Pay directly in the 7shifts mobile app.
  • Repayment is handled via a net-pay split. Advanced amounts are repaid directly from the employee's paycheck on payday, before the remaining balance is deposited. This shows up on the employee's pay stub as a direct deposit allocation to a Pathward DDA account.
  • You are never financially responsible for employee advances. If an employee can't repay, Clair manages recovery; the employer bears no liability.
  • W-2 employees only. Contractors are not eligible at this time.

How On-Demand Pay works for 7shifts payroll customers

Employees access Clair On-Demand Pay through the Clair dashboard in their 7shifts mobile app. Because 7shifts Payroll is backed by Check, Clair uses your company's payroll data for employee verification and underwriting. This means a faster sign-up experience and higher potential advance limits compared to the standard Plaid-based model.

  • Employees tap the Clair On-Demand Pay button at the bottom of their 7shifts mobile dashboard to get started.
  • Because your payroll data is already connected, employees don't need to link a personal bank account. Their bank account is automatically recognized through 7shifts Payroll.
  • Employees will verify their personal details and complete a brief onboarding flow.
  • Once set up, employees can advance up to $100 at a time, with a starting limit of up to $200 per pay period. Limits can increase up to $800 as employees build a repayment history.
  • Employees receive funds either via standard ACH transfer (1–3 business days, free) or Instant Transfer ($4.99 fee)*. The instant transfer fee is deducted directly from the advanced amount (e.g., an employee advancing $100 receives $95.01 in their account) while their repayment remains for the full advance amount ($100).
  • If your business operates under multiple EINs and an employee works across them, Clair automatically detects which EIN carries the higher pay and calculates their available balance accordingly. No configuration is required on your end.

Note: If your account transitions off 7shifts Payroll but you remain a 7shifts customer, employees with active Clair accounts automatically transition to the standard Plaid-based repayment model and can continue to advance as normal.

*Instant Transfers typically occur in seconds, but may take up to 30 minutes.

How does repayment affect my payroll?

Your payroll process stays completely unchanged. Repayment uses a net-pay split, not a bank pull. Clair collects any outstanding advance amount from the employee's paycheck before net pay is deposited.

  • Repayment is triggered automatically when you run payroll and the repayment allocation shows on the employee's pay stub as a direct deposit to a Pathward DDA account.
  • Advances are private between Clair and the employee. You won't see notifications or changes in your payroll reports.
  • If a paycheck is smaller than the outstanding advance, Clair takes a partial repayment and the rest is repaid from the next paycheck. The employee's advance access is paused until the balance is repaid in full.

Managing Clair On-Demand Pay

Clair On-Demand Pay is automatically enabled for eligible accounts. As the account Admin, you can opt out at any time, before or after the feature goes live.

Disable Clair On-Demand Pay

  1. Log in to the 7shifts web app as an Admin.
  2. In the left navigation bar, select Settings (or hover over your profile photo) > Add-ons.
  3. Click on the Clair On-Demand Pay add-on > Click Disable Clair.

Disabling Clair immediately removes On-Demand Pay access for all employees. Employees who have open advances at the time of employer opt-out retain access to On-Demand Pay until their advances are repaid, though they won't be able to request any more advances.

You can re-enable On-Demand Pay at any time via Settings > Add-ons > Clair On-Demand Pay > Enable Clair.

Can Admins see advance transactions?

Clair advances are private transactions between your employee and Clair. You won't receive notifications when an employee takes or repays an advance, and this activity won't appear in your 7shifts payroll reports.

The only place repayments are visible is on the employee's pay stub, where they appear as a direct deposit line item to the Pathward DDA account. Admins who have access to employee pay stubs in 7shifts can see this line item.

FAQ

Does this change how I run payroll?
No. Your payroll process stays exactly the same. Clair handles repayment by taking a net-pay split from the employee's paycheck. The allocation shows up on their pay stub, and you don't need to take any action.

Will I be notified when an employee takes an advance?
No. Advances are private between the employee and Clair. The only place repayments appear is on the employee's pay stub.

Am I financially responsible if an employee can't repay an advance?
No. Employers bear no financial responsibility for unpaid advances. Clair manages repayment directly. You are never liable.

What happens to employees who were already using Clair before this upgrade?
Employees who previously enrolled in Clair will be automatically upgraded and do not need to re-enroll. Their advance history remains intact, but their repayment method will switch from a Plaid bank pull to a net-pay split.

The next time these employees open the Clair app, they will be prompted to open an On-Demand Payment account and accept the new terms to support automatic repayments via direct deposit before taking future advances.

Can I see which employees have signed up for Clair?
No. Because advances are private transactions, 7shifts does not surface individual employee enrollment or advance activity to Admins.
