How to respond to a request for separation information

Does 7shifts handle requests for separation information?

No. 7shifts and our payroll partner, Check Technologies, don't handle Requests for Separation Information on your behalf. You'll need to respond to these notices directly through your state's unemployment agency.

What To Do

When a former employee files an unemployment claim and lists your business as their last employer, your state's unemployment agency will send you a Request for Separation Information. You typically have 10 days from the date the claim was filed to respond.

To respond, you'll need to log in to your state unemployment portal - not 7shifts. This account is separate from your 7shifts login. If you're not sure of your credentials, check with your accountant or use the "Forgot username" or "Forgot password" options on your state portal's sign-in page.

Important: If you don't respond by the due date, a decision on eligibility may be made using only the information available - which could affect your unemployment insurance tax rate.

What Information You'll Need to Provide

Your response will ask you to confirm details about the separation, including:

  • Reason for separation (why the person is no longer working for you).
  • Dates of employment.
  • Any money paid after separation.

You may also need to report separation pay, which can affect the employee's unemployment benefits. Common types include:

  • Regular wages for the last week worked.
  • Wages in lieu of notice.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO), including sick and vacation time.
  • Holiday pay.
  • Severance pay.
  • Bonuses (completion, staying, or retention).
  • Pension payments (lump sum or monthly).

What 7shifts Files on Your Behalf

7shifts does file certain payroll tax forms with your state on your behalf, but Requests for Separation Information are not included. These notices are tied to individual unemployment claims and must be handled directly by you as the employer.

Issue Unresolved

If you're having trouble accessing your state unemployment portal or need help locating your account credentials, contact your state's unemployment agency directly.
