Why do some of my companies file Form 944 instead of Form 941?

If you manage multiple companies in 7shifts Payroll, one company can file federal employment taxes quarterly on Form 941 while another files annually on Form 944. This is expected, because the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sets filing frequency for each Employer Identification Number (EIN), not for a parent brand or umbrella company.

The IRS reviews each employer's estimated or actual annual federal employment tax liability independently. When a specific EIN qualifies for annual Form 944 filing, the IRS notifies that EIN directly in writing. One company moving to Form 944 has no effect on your other companies, because the IRS evaluates each EIN and assigns a filing frequency separately.
