Does 7shifts Payroll track unpaid protected time off on pay stubs?

Why doesn't 7shifts Payroll track unpaid protected time off?

7shifts Payroll doesn't currently support automated tracking or pay stub display for Unpaid Protected Time Off balances. This comes down to a key legal distinction between two different types of unpaid leave.

Why This Happens

Not all unpaid time off works the same way under the law. Here's the difference:

  • Unpaid Protected Time Off is leave mandated by government law, such as the NYC Safe and Sick Time Act or the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Employees can't be disciplined for taking it. Local regulations often require employers to track accrued and used balances and list them on every pay stub.
  • Regular Unpaid Time Off is standard, non-mandated time away granted at your company's discretion (like voluntary unpaid personal leave or unexcused absences). This type doesn't carry job-protection laws or a legal requirement to track and display balances on pay statements.

Because Unpaid Protected Time Off has strict legal compliance requirements tied to it, it needs its own dedicated tracking. 7shifts Payroll doesn't yet support that automated tracking or pay stub display for these policies.

What To Do

Until this is supported natively in 7shifts Payroll, here's the recommended workaround:

  1. Manually track statutory leave balances outside of 7shifts — a spreadsheet works well for this.
  2. Use manual pay stub adjustments or notes (if available in your payroll setup) to include the legally required disclosures each pay period.

Important: If your business operates in a jurisdiction with mandatory pay stub disclosure requirements (such as New York City) you're responsible for ensuring employees receive those disclosures each pay period, even while this feature is not yet available in 7shifts Payroll.
