What is a CP-575 EIN confirmation letter?

Notice CP-575 is the formal confirmation letter provided by the IRS to verify that an Employer Identification Number (EIN) has been assigned to your business. 7shifts Payroll and other financial institutions may request this document as a primary proof of your business identity for tax filing and banking purposes.

Things to know

  • The IRS issues the CP-575 letter only once at the time your business is registered.
  • 7shifts Payroll may require the CP-575 letter for federal EIN verification.
  • The IRS cannot email these documents due to federal security regulations.

What is in a CP-575 letter

The IRS generates this letter automatically once an EIN application is processed. 7shifts Payroll may request the CP-575 letter to verify the following details:

  • The nine-digit EIN assigned to your business.
  • The legal business name exactly as it appears in IRS records.
  • The official mailing address for future tax notices.
  • The specific tax filing requirements for your business, such as Form 941 for 7shifts Payroll.

How to receive your CP-575 letter

The delivery method for Notice CP-575 depends on how you originally applied for your EIN with the IRS.

  • Online applications often provide a digital PDF version for immediate download.
  • Standard applications involve a hard copy sent via USPS to your business address within 4 to 6 weeks.
  • The IRS mails the letter to the address listed on your Form SS-4 application.

How to request an EIN verification letter (147-C)

If the original CP-575 letter is lost, you must request a Letter 147-C. The IRS does not issue duplicate CP-575 letters, but Letter 147-C serves as an equivalent EIN verification.

  1. Contact the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 1-800-829-4933.
  2. Request an EIN Verification Letter (147-C) from the agent.
  3. Provide the required security information about your business address and ownership to verify your identity.
  4. Select a delivery method of either a secure fax or a mailed hard copy.
