How to Send A Message

Messaging in 7shifts provides a two-way communication tool for staying connected with your managers and coworkers. You can send a quick note, share important updates, create custom group chats, and even message specific groups by location, department, or role.

  • 7shifts Messaging allows you to view and participate in chats for any assigned Location, Department, or Role group.
  • You can start individual conversations or create custom group chats within the 7shifts app.
  • Roster Talk allows you to message coworkers based on their scheduled shifts.

Things to Know


Important: To ensure that the correct users receive your message, Admins must have Assignments and Locations, Departments, and Roles set up in the 7shifts account.

  • Admins and Managers can manage assignments to ensure specific groups are participants within Channel Messages (by Location, Department, or Role).
  • 7shifts Messaging does not currently support read receipts.
  • Depending on the user's notification settings, all participants within a message or thread will receive an email or SMS notification once a comment has been added.

Send a Message


To access messaging chats, use the tabs below to view instructions for the mobile or web app. 

Mobile 📱 Web 🖥️
  1. Log in to the 7shifts mobile app.
  2. Tap the chat bubble icon in the menu bar.
  3. Tap on a message or chat from your list of conversations to open it.
  4. Type your message in the text box and tap the paper plane icon to send it.

Send Emojis, GIFs, and Attachments


You can use different media types to convey your message more effectively.

Mobile Web
  • To send an emoji, click the emoji Screen_Shot_2022-11-11_at_10.03.10_AM.png icon and use the built-in emojis on your device.
  • To send a GIF, click the GIF Screen_Shot_2022-10-01_at_3.08.25_PM.png icon, search for a keyword, and select Send.
  • To send an attachment, click the + (plus) icon to pick an image, video, file, or take a photo.
  • To add a reaction, long-press a message and select an icon from the preset menu. To see who has reacted to a message, long press on the message and select 'Reactions' from the dropdown menu. Or, click on the emoji icon and select 'Reactions'.
  • To remove a reaction, click on your reaction and it will disappear. Or, long press on the message and click on the reaction again to remove it.

Start a Thread


Threads allow you to comment on specific messages within a conversation to keep your chats organized.

Mobile Web
  1. Long-press a message and tap Comment in thread.
  2. Type your response and click the paper plane icon to send it.
  3. To continue a thread, tap on the X comments label under the message.

Note: Participants receive email or SMS notifications based on their individual notification settings when a new comment is added to a thread.
