What Are Remaining Tips in 7shifts?

Remaining Tips is a contribution type used in POS Tip Pooling that allows restaurants to redistribute any tips left over after an employee’s initial contribution-typically calculated as a percentage of sales. This ensures that leftover tips are still included in the pool and supports more complex tip workflows.

A Remaining Tips pool will calculate contributions on its own, even if no other tip-in contributions occur. Both assigned and unassigned employees will contribute based on the percentage you set, as long as they have eligible time punches within the roles or departments tied to that pool. If no contributions appear, it usually means there were no qualifying time punches for that pool during the selected cadence.

For example: Amy is a Server at a restaurant that pools tips by 3% of sales.

Amy made $1,500 in sales → 3% = $45 (initial contribution)
She earned $100 in tips
Remaining Tips = $100 - $45 = $55
The restaurant contributes 30% of Remaining Tips → $16.50
Amy takes home: $100 (tips earned) - $45 (initial contribution) - $16.50 (remaining tips contribution) = $38.50

⚠️ When using Remaining Tips across multiple interacting tip pools, all contributing pools must share the same cadence (e.g., daily, weekly), as the system can only deduct full contributions—differing cadences may cause discrepancies.

Let's look at a real-world setup using Remaining Tips:

A common use of Remaining Tips is when bartenders clock into a shared "Ghost Patio Bar" account when processing receipts. Why? A busy weekend bar may see the same terminal passed around frequently, between different bartenders; and it would be too time-consuming to update the specific server for each bartender each time.

At the end of the night, tips need to be pooled and distributed as:

Ghost Patio Bar contributes 5% of food sales to Support Staff + Bussers.
Ghost Patio Bar contributes 100% of the remaining tips equally amongst themselves based on hours worked.

To accomplish this, create a new tip pool. While adding your Contributors, be sure to select Tip-in Based On: Remaining Tips.

In this scenario, Bartenders will contribute 100% of their remaining tips...
