FAQs and Format Guide for Printing Paper Checks

This guide provides answers to common questions and issues related to check printing for 7shifts Payroll customers, including check stock format, downloading checks, banking information requirements, and payment processing.

What Format of Check Stock Is Required?

  • Use DLT159 (recommended) or DLT104 (acceptable, backward compatible).

Where Can I Order Check Stock?

⚠️Important Blank check stock will not work. Make sure to customize your check stock through your bank or a service like ChecKeeper.

Understanding Check Stock

What Is Check Stock?

  • Pre-printed paper containing your banking information.
  • Think of it as a “template” where the downloaded check details (name, net pay, date) are filled in.

Why Do I Need Customized Check Stock?

  • 7shifts check downloads do not include banking information.
  • Without customized stock, your checks are incomplete.

Downloading and Printing Checks

How to Download Checks:

  1. Log in as Admin on 7shifts Web.
  2. Go to Payroll > select 3 vertical dots next to the payroll you need to download checks for.
  3. Select Download paper checks (PDF).
⚠️ Note: Employees cannot download their own paychecks in 7shifts. Employees can only access their paystubs. Employers are responsible for downloading, printing, and distributing paper checks when this payment option is used.

What Does the Check Download Include?

  • Employee’s name, address, pay date, and net pay.
  • An Earnings statement will also be included for each employee.  
    • Does not include: Banking information (requires customized check stock).
⚠️ Note: The pay date on the cheque will be the expected pay date, not the date of submission. This cannot be altered. If you want a different pay date then the regular processing you can submit an off cycle instead and choose the pay date.

What If I Don’t Have Check Stock?

  • If you don’t have check stock, you can manually write checks or use your preferred payment method (e.g., money order, cash, Venmo, etc.).

  • Steps to Verify Net Pay for Each Employee:

    1. Go to Payroll.
    2. Click the three vertical dots and select View Payroll.
    3. Use the net pay amount to pay employees through your chosen payment method.
⚠️Reminder: Always use net pay, not gross pay.

Payment Processing

When Do Checks Become Available?

  • Immediately after payroll is submitted in a Pending state.
  • If payroll is reopened for edits, re-download updated checks after resubmitting.

When Are Funds Withdrawn?

  • At submission: Taxes for paper checks are withdrawn.
  • At check cashing: Net pay funds are withdrawn when the employee cashes the check.
