Things to Know

⚠️ Important: You must complete at least one successful payroll run in 7shifts before the Coverdash enrollment option becomes available.

  • This offering is available to 7shifts Payroll customers in all US states.
  • Only Admins on a 7shifts Payroll account can access and complete the Coverdash enrollment flow.
  • Each employee on payroll must have an NCCI (National Council on Compensation Insurance) code assigned before you can get a quote. 7shifts pre-fills recommended codes based on each employee's role, and you can adjust them if needed.
  • Coverdash collects premium payments directly from your business bank account on file with them. 7shifts does not deduct insurance premiums.
  • No down payment is required to start coverage under this pay-as-you-go model.
  • If you already have workers' comp coverage through another provider, you can connect your existing policy to sync premiums with your actual payroll data.

How pay-as-you-go workers' compensation works

Traditional workers' comp requires you to estimate your total annual payroll upfront, which often leads to a large bill at year-end when actual wages don't match the estimate. With Coverdash, 7shifts shares your actual payroll data after each pay run so your premiums reflect what you actually paid in wages.

  • You pay smaller premiums each pay period instead of a large upfront lump sum.
  • Premiums are based on your actual staff and hours worked, not a yearly estimate.
  • Annual insurance audits are less likely to result in unexpected charges.
  • No manual payroll reporting to your insurer — 7shifts sends the data automatically after each run.
  • Coverdash connects you to quotes from 30+ carriers side by side, so you can compare real prices with no hidden terms.

What workers' compensation covers

Workers' compensation through Coverdash can help cover costs related to workplace injuries or illness, including:

  • Medical expenses (examinations, treatments, and rehabilitation)
  • Lost wages (income support while an employee recovers)
  • Retraining support for employees who need to learn new skills after an injury
  • Permanent injury benefits for employees who can no longer work
  • Survivor benefits (funeral cost assistance and income replacement for families)
  • Employer liability protection if an employee files a lawsuit related to a workplace injury

Note: Contact Coverdash directly for questions about your specific coverage.

Set up Coverdash workers' compensation in 7shifts

After your first successful payroll run, you'll also see a prompt in the payroll submitted confirmation modal that takes you directly to the Benefits tab.

Note: Multi-EIN customers will need to set up workers' comp for each separate EIN. You can switch between EINs using the dropdown menu above the tab menu.

Step 1: Assign NCCI codes to your employees

Before you can get a quote, each employee on payroll needs an NCCI (National Council on Compensation Insurance) code. 7shifts pre-fills a suggested code based on each employee's role. You can adjust any code that doesn't match an employee's actual job duties.

  1. Go to Payroll > Benefits to access Coverdash.
  2. Click on Get a quote.
  3. Input your Business information.
  4. Review and confirm the Workers’ comp classifications. Adjust any that don't reflect actual job duties.
    • If any employees are missing a code, you'll see a 'Needs Input' prompt with top matches you can manually choose from and save before you can continue.

  5. Authorize data sharing so Coverdash can access your payroll data for automatic premium calculations.
  6. Click ‘Continue to Coverdash quote’.

Note: Workers’ comp classification or NCCI (National Council on Compensation Insurance) codes categorize each employee by their job duties to determine the correct premium rate. 7shifts pre-fills suggested codes based on existing roles. A manager who also cooks or buses tables should be classified under a food service code, regardless of their title. Misclassification is the most common trigger in workers' comp audits.

Step 2: Get a quote and enroll

  1. Complete the quote and enrollment steps within the Coverdash flow.
  2. Purchase your policy directly through Coverdash.

Note: If Coverdash needs additional information to generate your quote, they'll contact you using the phone number or email you provided during enrollment.

Common Questions

Will Coverdash deduct my premiums?

Yes, Coverdash will automatically deduct the calculated premium using the bank account information provided when purchasing your policy. 7shifts does not deduct insurance premiums.

What are NCCI codes and why do I need them?

NCCI (National Council on Compensation Insurance) codes classify each employee by their job duties to determine the correct premium rate for workers' comp coverage. They're required by Coverdash to generate an accurate quote. 7shifts pre-fills suggested codes based on your existing employee roles, and you can adjust any that don't match actual duties before submitting.

What if I have employees in multiple roles?

Each employee should be classified based on their primary job duties. A manager who regularly performs manual kitchen work should carry a food service code, not a management code. You can review and edit each employee's classification during the setup flow.

How do I make changes to my policy after enrolling?

Contact your Coverdash agent directly to change coverage levels or other policy details. You can access policy management options from Payroll > Benefits once your policy is active.

What if Coverdash needs more information to complete my quote?

There are cases where Coverdash requires additional information to generate a quote or provide coverage. If that happens, Coverdash will contact you directly using the phone number or email address you submitted during the application.

Can I connect an existing Coverdash policy with 7shifts Payroll?

Yes, reach out to your Coverdash agent to get set up.
