Workers' Compensation by NEXT Insurance
7shifts Payroll customers can access Pay As You Go Workers' Compensation Insurance through NEXT Insurance. Workers' compensation helps protect your employees and your business if a workplace injury or illness occurs. Unlike traditional insurance that requires an estimated annual premium upfront, this integration calculates premiums in real-time based on your actual payroll data.

- If you already have workers' comp coverage through another provider, you can transfer your broker of record to NEXT directly in 7shifts without changing your existing coverage.
How Pay As You Go Workers' Compensation works
Traditional workers' comp insurance requires you to estimate your payroll a year in advance, which can lead to large balance payments after an annual audit. With Pay As You Go, 7shifts shares your actual payroll data with NEXT Insurance every pay period so your premiums reflect what you actually paid in wages.
This integration provides several benefits:
- You pay smaller premiums every pay period instead of a large upfront lump sum.
- Premiums are based on your actual staff and hours worked, not a yearly estimate.
- Annual insurance audits are faster and less likely to result in unexpected bills.
- No manual payroll reporting to your insurer — 7shifts sends the data automatically.

- Permanent injury: benefits for employees who can no longer work due to injury

Workers' compensation options in 7shifts
Under Payroll > Benefits, you'll see three options for workers' compensation coverage through NEXT Insurance. Choose the path that matches your situation.
Get a new pay-as-you-go policy
Use this option if your business doesn't currently have workers' comp coverage.
- Go to Payroll > Benefits.
- Under NEXT Insurance, click Find a plan.
- Verify your business details and click Next.
- Follow the prompts through the Start, Coverage, and Application steps.
- Purchase your policy directly through NEXT Insurance.
Note: NEXT Insurance pre-fills your business details using data from your 7shifts Payroll setup. Verify that all details are current and accurate before submitting. If NEXT needs additional information to generate your quote, they'll contact you using the phone number or email you provided.
Connect an existing NEXT policy
Use this option if you already have a workers' comp policy through NEXT Insurance and want to enable automatic premium calculations from your 7shifts payroll.
- Go to Payroll > Benefits.
- Under NEXT Insurance, click Connect coverage.
- Follow the prompts to link your existing NEXT policy to your 7shifts account.
Your coverage stays the same. Connecting your policy switches premium billing to pay-as-you-go from your payroll cycle.
Transfer broker of record (BOR) to NEXT
Use this option if you have workers' comp coverage through a different provider and want to make NEXT Insurance your broker while keeping your existing coverage in place.
- Go to Payroll > Benefits.
- Under NEXT Insurance, click Switch broker to Next.
- Follow the in-app prompts to initiate the broker of record transfer.
Your existing coverage and carrier do not change during a BOR transfer. Once the transfer is complete, premium billing switches to pay-as-you-go through your 7shifts payroll cycle.
