How to resolve Gusto payroll export errors
Issue
You are unable to export payroll data from 7shifts to Gusto and receive an error message during the sync process.
Cause
This export failure typically occurs for one of two reasons:
- A pay period has not been initialized or "started" within your Gusto account.
- The export contains negative tip amounts, which Gusto does not support.
What To Do
Important: You must have Admin access to both 7shifts and Gusto to complete these steps.
Initialize the Pay Period in Gusto
Before 7shifts can send data to Gusto, the pay period must be opened and saved in a draft state within Gusto. Follow these steps to prepare Gusto for the export:
- Log in to your Gusto account.
- Locate and select the Run Regular Payroll button:
- Select Save changes for later. This initializes the pay period without finalizing it.
- Return to 7shifts, navigate to Time Clocking > your pay period, and select Export > Gusto.
Review and Adjust Tip Totals
Gusto does not accept negative values for tip amounts. If your 7shifts payroll report contains negative tips, the sync will fail.
- The Admin must check the payroll report in 7shifts for any negative values in the tips column.
- The Admin must adjust these entries to zero or a positive value within 7shifts before attempting the export again.
