Things to Know

Important: Managers and Assistant Managers require the permission "Can manage training" to create content and "Can view training" to assign courses and view training reports.

  • Training is built and managed on the 7shifts web app, while employees complete their assigned courses through the 7shifts mobile app.
  • You can save time by using AI to instantly convert existing documents or text prompts into structured lessons and quizzes. AI-generated content should be reviewed for accuracy before publishing.

Training Structure

7shifts Training is organized into parts that work together: the Course your team is assigned, and the Lessons and Tasks that make it up.

  • Courses: The top-level container used to group related Lessons and Tasks into a single assigned unit.
  • Lessons: The reusable digital building blocks containing text, images, videos, quizzes, and acknowledgements.
  • Tasks: Real-world "on-the-floor" actions that can require manager review or employee comments.

Courses

A Course is the published unit your team works through from start to finish. You build a Course by arranging Lessons and Tasks into an ordered sequence, and employees complete each step before the next one unlocks. Courses cover anything from full new-hire onboarding to a quick refresher on a new menu item.

Lessons

Lessons are the teaching pieces inside a Course, built from a mix of content cards. Each Lesson can include text, images, videos, quizzes, and acknowledgements. Lessons live in your Lesson Library and can be reused across as many Courses as you'd like, so you only have to build something like "Allergen Awareness" once.

You can build Lessons manually, upload a PDF or document and let AI draft the content for you, or generate a Lesson from a text prompt.

More information on creating Lessons here.

Tasks

Tasks are the off-screen actions that prove an employee can apply what they've learned, like shadowing a shift, completing a side-work checklist, or demonstrating a skill to a manager. Each Task includes a name and instructions, and you can choose to require a written comment from the employee, manager review, or both before the Task is marked complete.

Next Steps

After understanding the training framework, you can begin building your content.

  • Create Lessons to build your Lesson Library.
  • Build and publish a Course complete with your desired Lessons and Tasks.
  • Assign the Course to your team.
  • Review the employee guide for completing training on the mobile app.
